Turning a Buck
Fredrick Zydek
There’s something distinctly American
about risking everything, about chasing
even science to see if it can turn a buck.
We’re the people who don’t mind going
to battle for peace, who give more praises
to athletic beauty than to string quartets
and mathematical theories. The first thing
one learns about living in a democracy
is that it is dangerous business. Freedom
of speech never sounds so bad as when we
are in the middle of a political campaign.
Name calling has become more important
than talking about real issues because
everyone knows the real issues are so out
of control, no one is going to be able to do
anything about them anyhow. Just look
at the enmity George W. Bush built between
ourselves and the Moslem world. We have
now killed over 600,000 innocent children,
men and women in Iraq - all in the name
of ridding their country of weapons of mass
destruction that were never there in the first
place. We have pulverized their economy,
educational system, infrastructure and wealth.
Moslems from all over the world are joining
in the fight against American imperialism,
and we stand around talking about whether
or not Christians have the right to keep gay
Americans from obtaining the same rights
they have or whether one group of men and
women should be able to tell others what
to do with their bodies. Truth is at a high
premium in the US of A. because spin
doctors and slick advertising departments
have learned to make lies sound like truth.
