Shake My Ashes

David J. Thompson

Don’t bury me anywhere.
No, see that I’m cremated, please.
Then wait for a July evening
when you can watch
a thunderstorm roll east
across the Catkills and,
when the air has cleared,
take my ashes to the Vanderbilt Estate
on the north end of my hometown
where as kids we’d sneak in
after dark to make out or get high,
or both. Carry the urn down the big hill
and across the train tracks to Bard Rock,
right there on the river. Take some time
to drink a New York beer or two
that I was weaned on - Schaefer,
Piels, or Genny Cream – and play
John Prine’s first album with its mix
of funny songs, and real sad ones, too.
When it feels right, shake my ashes
into the Hudson, watch them float south
first toward Poughkeepsie where I was born,
then imagine them on their way down-river
past New York City out into the Atlantic,
heading eventually everywhere else
in this big, old never-ending world.
