Bereavement

He seemed like such a gentle man,
shy about asking
for a basic recipe book.
Nothing fancy.
I haven't cooked for myself
for a long time, you see.
And so I showed him what we had.
Simple ingredients.
My wife died recently.
No glamorous photographs, just
a decent omelette.
She always cooked, and I cleaned.
I have this one at home,
works every time.
We were a team.
He paid in cash, counted carefully,
and reached out a hand for
someone who wasn't there,
as if to say
Come on, love.
My turn to cook tonight.
