Death Poetry

Dave Somerset

To die most honorably
overcomes the inadequacy
of our disappointing lives.
Star crossed lovers thwarted,
choosing to die together
instead of living apart,
or the warrior’s suicide
instead of surrender;
noble.
Death of old age is
a pale indignity
devoid of all honor and glory.
Death, tied to a bell
at the bottom of a lake;
honorable.
Cutting open your own intestines
and abdominal cavity,
full of organs and agony
with a long sword while
holding back the signal
to the friend behind you,
until the last possible moment,
to take your head;
glorious!
