Stolen Wishes

birthday girl
once so joyful
a bright-eyed child
who loved to sing
float and flirt
as she danced
now sits quiet
stiff and silent
nearly in tears
her sweet face
badly scratched
as if by a cat
family and friends
doing their best
try to console her
tell her she’s pretty
that it won’t last
but she knows better
her pain runs deep
with no end in sight
camera phones
held at the ready
but thankfully off
as an older sister
the jealous one
blows out the candles
makes her own wish
for fresh scars to heal
the ones she inflicted
and for everyone there
to somehow forgive her
