North Wind

E. Martin Pedersen

Losing love is like a window in your heart
Everybody sees you’re blown apart
Everybody feels the wind blow
                (Paul Simon)

The North Wind blows up from a hole in the earth near the North Pole; it swirls around
to pick up momentum and then spreads out—everything’s South,
it sprinkles snow on Norway and her sturdy houses, the same snow
it dumps on Alaska, U.S. Territory, after visiting Douglas, Skagway and Seward,
it scurries over the Evergreen State with no variation, then smoothly toboggans into California.
I awake.

It shakes the leafless trees of France and rattles the tin factories full of immigrants from TinCanistan
it snuzzles up to the Alps—the higher the better—then braces down on you
closes in on your habitable space and chills you when you go outdoors,
it follows your blue and gold scarf; it caresses your head and runs along your swinging hair
drips off your roomy white coat and pours onto the sidewalks where you’ve passed;
when it ambles round eleven days later, pooped and feeling old,
that tiny smirk of briskness tells me that my North Wind has touched your face again.
