Quote

Frederick Pollack

Irretrievably forgotten, but I think
it was a woman – committed, effective,
no doubt tough-minded but allowing herself
a moment in an optimistic era,
long dead. She was looking at the towers,
which in that city are on hills,
which allows, below and between them,

shaded utopias. When it’s over,
when we’ve won –
think (she said) of the housing,
the day-care centers, schools and galleries

up there. And her friend said, You don’t understand:
without capitalism, without what’s actually
going on in those buildings, they would have
no reason for being.
The shame and, with age, the special terror
of forgetting a source enforces

what’s remembered. So I agree
with the friend, who may
have responded later, and been a writer,
and implied a subtext, that is a vision,
of a lowered skyline left to gulls,
trees softening rubble hills, perhaps

a view of the surviving bridges crossed
at most by bicycles. Yet both were right.
