Words

I heard someone yesterday say
bad words
in relation to words commonly
called “curse words”

What?
Words aren’t bad in themselves
The use of them may be bad
or at least inappropriate

Normally when people think
of a bad word they mean
the so-called f-word
which is a way of getting
the reader to say fuck
in her/his own mind
without the writer having to
sully her/his publication
by writing it

When various levels of
government tried to ban
novels by DH Lawrence
and Henry Miller because
they dared to use this word
in their writing, the courts
stepped in and ruled they
could not do so and so
fuck won

I admit to using the f-word
in my writing and even
in speech but I try to reserve
such use to writing of passionate
sex or for shock value

I particularly deplore the use
of it as an adjective to describe
        the weather
        traffic
        noise
        the guy next door
and I think it is inappropriate
to be used in front of a grandmother

Recently, I see the New York tabloids
the Daily News and the accursed NY Post
use WTF? to indicate incredulous

 To the audience
   What does WTF mean?
 PAUSE
 Say it Again

I think that this abbreviation
is an insult to the reader
If you won’t write the words
Don’t make us read them
By the way, I feel the same way
about the n-word and the s-word

And if you don’t agree with me
    then
Fuck you
