Marilyn Flower

Restless night, uneasy dreams
I speak words with harsh undertones
to a long-gone lover
From some deep recess, a voice calls
‘Is this who you want to be?’
Startled, I wake.
We keep our desperations
to ourselves,
never knowing
if giving them voice is
weak or strong,
will be welcomed or shunned,
an opening or the closing
of the self
or perhaps an invitation
to a lover.
