she tells me
“my friends think you’re not
career focused. they think that’s why
we won’t work out. they think
that since I’m career focused
and you’re not
we’re doomed to stick
in mud at best
and hate each other.”

not career focused - me! - with books
in stores
on two continents
and I type most nights
and do submissions - the week is rare
when something new
is not released. I’m
an open sewage pipe -
mud everywhere,
and bubbling.

but still,
I still know what they mean;
they mean
real work, the kind of thing
you can retire from. friends, look:
I’ve survived death
twice. paris broke my skull
and kicked apart
in london. it’s naive, I know, but forgive me
not minding
being skipped over promotion
while I’m aiming
hard
at what I’m aiming at.
