Billy Leaves Home

Andrew Miller

William coughed, spat. You going where?”
    “I said: ‘Washington.’”
    “State of Washington?”
“God’s sake Dad. District of Columbia.”
“Why Washington DC? What’s going on?”
“I told you. I’ve an interview.”
“Going by Plane? Got a ticket?”
“Yes, by plane. But no ticket.”
William’s eyes flashed. “Is Bonnie going?”
“No Dad, jeez.” Billy squirmed, shuddered.
“Shit fire, Billy. Tell the truth. Bet she’s going.”
    “She’s not going.”
“Oh, come on.” William hawked, spat. “Drinking and screwing. Don’t kid me. I ain’t paying. Not for screwing.” His lips curled.
“It’s just me. All by myself.”
“Going to museums? Washington’s got plenty. I been once.”
    “Dad, an interview...”
“Jesus, an interview? Where’s it at?”
    “Senator Cochran’s Office.”
    “What’s it for?”
    “For an internship.”
    Billy’s dad sneered.
    “Is Cochran colored?”
“For God’s sake. No, he’s not.”
    “He a Democrat?”
    “No, a Republican.”
William smiled, chuckled. “You’re gettin’ sense.” His eyebrows rose. “Many coloreds there?”
“In his office? I don’t know. Does it matter?”
“Sure it does. They’re all fuck-ups.”
“I want this. It’s an opportunity!” Billy’s fists clenched.
“Opportunity for what?” William coughed, belched. “Stay right here. Stay in Mississippi.”
    “Why should I?”
“Work for Louis. At the club.”
    “And, doing what?”
“Take green fees. Talk to people.”
    “Oh, come on.”
    “It’s whites only.”
“Dad, I’m going. Flying out tomorrow.”
    “So, who’s paying?”
    “Paying for what?”
    “The airplane ticket.”
    Billy said nothing.
William spat again. “Hell, I’m not. Neither’s your Ma.”
“It’s no matter.” Billy stood up. “Bonnie’s Dad’s paying.”
William’s shoulders sagged. “For Christ’s sake.”
