Play it forward

in my hometown there lived a very mysterious couple
isolated in their unique errant deportment,
they tested scrupulous small town folk’s reserve
and were deemed outcasts rather speedily.

A friend of mine who also happened to be a conspiracy theorist
(hard to believe such tomfoolery at the tender age of 12)
broke into their house while they were on holiday to prove his
unfounded theory, which painted them as members of the illuminati.

he showed up early to school the next day, carrying his loot:
a big flesh coloured vibrator – bigger in size I assumed, than any of us.
an uncanny find indeed and it captivated all of us
- of course more so with the places it has been -
but when the novelty wore off we decided to pay it forward.

we wrapped the gloating shaft in gift paper and
placed it in the post box of a well known old sour couple
a few houses down. a couple of days later we saw her
grin from ear to ear as she slammed the trunk of the car shut,
accidentally dropping a couple of AA batteries.

she looked at us only briefly and composed herself fashionably,
picked up the batteries, composed her clothes and disappeared.
my friends and I laughed for some time but as with young boys
we quickly forgot the degree of impact from this ordeal, but I swear I remember,
as she bent over to pick up her batteries, she briefly smiled and winked at me.
