Ellen

Rachael Dickzen

She used to care for these flowers with
a firm, exacting hand.

With fingers that knew
furniture sold in a brown dusty land
to people who called her
the cause of her own son’s misery.

With fingers that knew threads
piecing together a whole world,
fabric scraps and needles making
out a legacy to keep.

With fingers that knew the soft touch
of a willow, its lamenting leaves
guarding her house, her land,
her barking little dog.

With fingers that knew the photos all,
the faded farmhouses and
the somber men with mustaches,
the husband she smiled with for 55 years.

With fingers that knew the way
to bring forth green life and
kept it blooming
in the Oklahoma sunshine,
the heat, dry as death.
