Experiments with Jesus

Phelan Tinsley

Go to Jesus, have a little chat.
Ask him to heal your ills,
To bless you with fortune,
And keep you high on Pete’s list.

Undress yourself,
Leave your burden by his door.
Tip-toe across the dirt and crawl into bed.

Lay your head on the good book
And let the words relieve your pain.
His hands slide around your waist,
Scream the names of Apostles.

Revel in the robes and trust in the wine.
Worry not—keep your head down,
Let the word take you away.

His talents, more valuable than those of Moses,
Allow a split surely to let waters flow.
Carpenter hands work best around edges.

You’ve waited to come for Jesus,
Now let him come for you.

When finished he’ll strip you of those robes,
drink all the wine and assume you’re healed.

With dirty feet and an empty conscious
You slowly dress, glancing at the burdens left by the door.
He never even looked at them.
I guess you see you’re more in love with him than he’ll ever be with you.
