Early Morning Train

Jon Carter

She was looking good
and
we were the last two
up, dancing,

smoking and
drinking.

I knew she was married and
she knew
that
I knew
but neither of us
said anything about it.

It was better to pretend
and to play and to
not have to
worry about any of it.

Then we heard it
Coming, barreling,
and
we both took out
of the house

after exchanging a
whimsical glance.

we ran thru
the tall grass
in the dark,
laughing like children,
out of our minds.

Running from the fear
chasing after everything, anything,
chasing after
the moment
in the sound.

we caught the end of
it and watched it
roll away without us
and we knew.

after the train was out of sight,
when we went
in and lay
next to each other

I couldn’t get it up
and we passed out,
drunk and harmless.
