A Letter to My Rapist

Inguna Brože

You stood there in the dusk
Behind the trees,
Your face was hidden –
  Masked and hooded –
  But your hands were bared,
They held me down.

I know not
If it was by chance or intention,
If I just happened to be there
Or if you were waylaying me,
But one or the other
There is no excuse
For what you did to me
On that early summer evening
When I had the news
To bring back home,
And all my grown-up life ahead
So full of dreams and ambitions,
You crashed it all,
Made it crumble and fall,
To satisfy your nasty needs,
You burnt my life and left were the ashes.

But –
  Life won’t be easy
For you too,
Believe it, be prepared,
The hour of truth,
It comes quite soon,
Then you’ll be tried
For all dirty deeds;
You may think it to come
Out of the blue,
But the clue
Is that one has to pay –
  Sooner or later –
  For all that’s been done,
No one goes unpunished
Under this Sun –
One way or the other –,
When your turn comes
I’ll be there
Without a pity,
Or forgiveness,
Not even a wee bit of sympathy,
You deserve to be smothered,
Turned to dust and
Swept out from the world,
No one will be bothered,
The life will go on.

P.S.
I won’t ever send this letter,
I’ll keep it within me better,
You’re no worthy to have it,
Now when I’m stronger –
Believe it.
I won’t ever send this letter,
I’ll keep it within me better,
You’re not worthy to have it,
Now when I’m stronger –
Believe it.
