Cider

Enda Boyle

My first half-pint was a disaster, a fizz-loaded sugar saturated measure of acid
passed across the bar by a dour eighteen stone walrus-like Caledonian publican.
Consumed in a public house approximately three and a half miles from the nearest
Population centre. Underneath damp-rotted rafters I took my first sip.

As I gulped and gagged trying to force the high-vis orange corporate crap
down my throat some arse sauntered across to the digital jukebox.
Before long the floor began to throb to the rhythms of Cher, Liam Clancy,
Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan. The times really were a-changing.

Before long I had hopped of my stool to greet a slightly inebriated class mate.
As we leaned against a slanted wall discussing the upcoming A-Level mocks
We began to hear shouts of discontent from a cluster of age hardened regulars.
Apparently we were in their spot and who did we think we were, who indeed?
