I Wanted A Family

Travis Green

There I was staring into your
kingdom, every part of you
ready to leave the country to chase
after your dreams, your southern
eyes so anxious to depart and follow
your heart, cheeks rising in jubilant
joy, radiant shoulders shining for
the first time in life as I studied
your existence, each wave inside
your veins, the treasured poetry
buried beneath your soul. I wanted
you to stay with me, build a home
together and raise a family, to
work around the gleaming grassland
and turn it into something great,
more like an exhilarating landscape
I wanted you to plant a garden behind
our home, water the flourishing flowers –
their bright horizons smiling in delight,
embracing the blossoming beauty all
around them. To ride some weekends
with the kids and travel to the beach,
our bodies streaming in paradise,
playing in the shimmery sand, rubbing
its grainy depiction on our face, giggling
in high sounds, our kids running back
and forth towards the deep blue water,
chatting in mere language like the days
would never accelerate forward, like
time had stopped to dance in their upbeat
rhythms. And when night came, the sky
turning pitch dark, starry clouds drifting
in the backdrop of immense bridges,
tranquil trees standing in the distance,
bathing in the sweet scenery surrounding
their world, we would return home
and watch Disney movies with the kids –
preferably The Lion King, our kids ebullient
eyes caught up on every thrilling moment.
we were a family, a family that I dreamed
of when I first met you, a family that would
conquer the universe and leave a mark etched
into the deepest grounds of the earth.
