Please Get Up

Cheryl L. Caesar

My dear, please get up. It is not that hard.
You needn’t think of everything at once.

When you throw back the quilt, don’t stop to ask
how they have slept, the kids on concrete floors,
wrapped in aluminum, forgotten scraps
tossed from the freezer by some careless slob.

And when you go to splash your morning face
and pour a clean glass filtered by the fridge,
don’t pause and picture flint-grey lead-filled sludge,
relentless poisons marching through the brain.

Go to the window with your pretty cup
and look out on your lilies and your lawn.
And don’t imagine bleak, unplanted fields,
foreclosures, bankruptcy and suicide.

Above all, don’t allow yourself to think
of bloated, orange monster in his bed,
belching his Diet Cokes, farting Big Macs,
and reaching for his Fox News and his phone.
He hardly sleeps: four hours or five a night
Evil, it now appears, can power itself.

If you allow this thought to flood your brain
you never will get up. And then he’s won.
So feel the cool soft air, the healing breath
of green things growing. Listen to the birds
that shout for joy. Just think of what remains;
and find the strength to fight for one more day.
