The Arch of Triumph – Latakia

Susie Gharib

Moss-bitten, weather-eaten, an ancient arch of stone
stands amidst a labyrinth of urban sprawl,
the ugliest constructions that architecture owns.

It stares at the havoc of modern homes,
shapeless, columnless, without any cubes,
attesting to minds that have grown wan.

Knights once rode up the cobbled road
to assemble beneath its initiatory dome,
which, now facing litter, slumbers alone.
