the only thing that makes someone less

Linda M. Crate

you want to claim
silly things
are un-american
like not liking hot dogs
or watermelon,
but what about torture?
is that american?
my heart breaks when i see
videos of kids and their mothers
reunited months after
separation that should have never happened,
and i always weep
for the evil that is sewn in these camps;
i weep for my country—
what have we become?
anyone who disagrees with anyone
is called a snowflake,
but they are unique and beautiful
so call me what you will;
i am more american than you will ever be
because i believe we are all equal
regardless of skin color, religion, gender,
orientation, or anything else you could claim
makes someone inferior;
because the only thing that makes someone less
is when they choose to be cruel.
