Home Sweet Home

Abby-Hope Jihye Park

He was at school, drawing, cutting, and gluing things. He took his scissors and slid them across the paper, cutting a straight line, a technique that he learned from his mother’s baking.
“Students, please gather around my desk,” the teacher stated, with a look of fear in her eyes.
Of course, the students listened. Some still had papers in their hands, glue in their mouths, and scissors hanging from their thumbs. He imagined that this is sometimes what his mother looked like while baking. Except for the glue part.
An unfriendly man barged through the door, and the boy knew something was wrong. The boy heard loud sounds, so loud that covering his ears did not muffle the it. He was scared.
“Teacher. Teacher,” he whispered as he knew he had to be silent. “Teacher.”
But she did not respond. The teacher’s arms were limp and had a red liquid on it, like his mother when she was tired of mixing the red velvet cake batter. He panicked, but then remembered the promise that his mom had made. Red velvet cake after school. He looked around and heard one last loud sound. Then, he saw nothing.
