Battered

Kirsty A. Niven

Bruises flourish,
black dahlias upon my
barren body –
stretch-marks stem across
skin, starving snakes.
War torn landscape,
each slice blooms
like a poppy’s tongued kiss.
The graves are marked
in cemented scars,
drawing out a path,
a labyrinth that grows
with each passing day.
Time decays onwards
and I wait for the reprieve
of a winter that never comes.
