Rain Poem

How’d you feel that inclement night?
I felt like a hydroplaning truck
along the street in the downpour,
the flat storefronts neoned and languid.

I saw creased backs of raincoats
on lime stools in cafe windows,
coffee drinkers’ pink lips wrinkled like
plastic bags, noses glinting; loud thunder.

I sung over the bellowing thunder
to the eastbound cars, spun my
head and sung for westbound cars.
The smile parted and asked me:

Remember how you’d sit inside all day?
It was so chilly, how long
had you stayed there since you last
felt the warmth of faithful humor?
