what’s in a twenty-seven?

amy, janis, jimi, jim, kurt;
careers cut far too short
likely their gateway
was their suffering—
they weren’t given the time to process
what they needed to or the support
they needed to thrive,
everyone is so quick to judge
what they don’t understand;
but perhaps if they were given
more kindness and more love
there would’ve been more music
and memories and joy with these five—
instead they’re just young lives lost
too soon,
all twenty-seven;
seems a terrible coincidence—
what’s in a name, they say, but i want
to know what’s in a twenty-seven?
