Before Tender Sex

I’m having an affair
with my wife’s friend,
a recent widow who lives
just down the street.
We spend red wine afternoons
listening to Gustave Mahler
and talking of guilt and loneliness,
before tender sex that leads
first to tears, then dream-free sleep.

I wake to the faraway thunder
of an evening storm and a kiss
on the forehead, dress in silence,
then walk home praying for the rain
to come and wash me clean.
