I wanted to talk about poetry
and baseball, and she wanted to
shoot pool with the locals.
I was stuck with a bar tab watching
the sun go down over the harbor,
while she beat the wankers at eight
ball, a cigarette between clenched
teeth, one eye mostly squeezed shut
as she lined up another shot, a cluster
of long necks and shots of Comfort
on the side bar she leaned against
cowgirl style, as her marks called
combinations they would never make.
Not only would she beat every man
who came forward, she could out drink
them as well, still standing at last call
while more than a few had to be loaded
into flat beds to sleep it all off, radios
tuned to all night new music stations,
sounds so raw anyone listening had
dreams they might never wake from.
