the further they are
from people

people become clearer
the closer they live
to lakes

push and pull
across the mauled landscape we go

up and down
on a handcar

clasping hands with the world
uncoupling
shoving away
clenching again

taking on passengers
new generations

we hope will be wiser

than we were
