If we were to talk about it

one of us
would label the other
a bleeding-heart open borders
latte-sipping liberal

the other would be dubbed
a heartless gun-hugging
racist right-wing yahoo

but I wonder what
either of us
would do

if we were face to face
with a Honduran mother
and her five children

blown like dead chaparral
against the fence posts
of our legs

looking up
with swamp-black eyes

begging
for mercy.
