I would love him too,

if I had never left Bedford Falls,
if I had seen with my own eyes
the storefronts closed like lids
against the fiery wave of progress
that devoured every job
and left a trail of junkies
in its blackened wake,
wilted flowers blown against the gates
of dereliction, be it factory
or church or school or
recreation center, each space of
congregation barricaded and extinct
except for dismal holes where
the unchemically inclined could drink
the potions that would conjure
the mirage of golden yesteryears,
those visions dancing in the eyes
of every barfly with a played-out hand
who fell in love with a maniacal
messiah-huckster blowing lies
from the almighty poison box
above the bar, the yakking idol that
replaced the God of Abraham
and Moses long ago and shoved a
prophet shouting “Trust me” and
“Believe me” in the faces of the
bleary-eyed survivors of a shipwreck
no one even recognized as such
till he said it was so.

God I would have loved him too.
