Shattered beat

Travis Green

It’s been over twenty years since my days
of being free from slavery; the cold splitting
depths that used to damage my interior, scarlet
flames blazing my flesh into smoke-stained
depictions, jagged horizons offbeat and creaking,
sluggish syllables chained and drained, my heart
drifting in the inner walls of wretched fields.
I remember the dreadful nights when my master
used to beckon me to his door, his grubby hands
yanking me onto the soiled bed, having his way
with me, fucking me repeatedly, dank sloppy seconds
shifting into faded blacks and yellows – his darkened
eyes traveling over my bruised body, searching
the inner rhythms of my nature as I tried to pull
back from his nation. Still, his mugshot kingdom
devoured my existence, his shattered words cutting
close under my skin, his chalky voice echoing
in the air, “Nigger, you are mines forever,” as I
slightly smiled, staring outside at the blackened sky,
wondering when my freedom would come, when I could
escape these disintegrating dungeons, breathe
in a new wave, feel the cool crisp breeze
encompassing my brown skin, the sheer sensation
of tall trees and leaves singing in the skyline.
But all I could hear in the drowning darkness was his earth
exploding oceans, his drunken diction drifting,
sinking, rising in brutal beats, bloodshot rhymes
lingering and disturbed in the backdrop of crushed
galaxies.
