Cogs

David Sapp

We’re eager to assume,
buttress our delusion:
we’re not mere cogs,
our lives not mechanical;
we’re unique and spontaneous,
charmingly eccentric on occasion.
However, we get up, eat, defecate,
oil our gears, watch the news,
accrue the years, and conspire
with our vast machine:
we fabricate, we purchase,
obscenely we devour,
perversely we queue up
for the assembly line,
for the check-out line,
our voracious bellies
filled, spilling sloppily
in plastic and metal things
packaged in crisp edges.
We’re so clever,
our products witty,
all for our convenience.
Certainly, there is a pleasure
when anything functions,
when a wrench grips
and turns a bolt just so,
and yet, we’re eager to assume,
our love-making is not mechanical,
our thrills, unique and spontaneous,
our hips and sighs something
more than efficient pistons.
