she wears a permanent scowl on her face

she aches
heavily scared back

from all the knives that massacred her trust

and betrayed her love

constantly takes sorrowful sighs

after every line she speaks
having mastered the art of speaking in loud whispers

a language of heaviness

only she can decipher


she responds to stranger’s passing greetings without any eye contact
as to not give away too much of herself
because there is nothing left to give


she’s become so good

at masking her tears

faking a sneeze or yawn

so that her glossy eyes

give away no suspicion

on days she fails to refrain

from letting them pour

she’d prepare supper early

in the afternoon
taking her time with chopping the onions
meticulously allowing each tear to fall

like a stifled cry


I could write a series of books

to try and document your pain

and would never be able to fully express

the magnitude of the volcano inside you
Mother.
