The Supernova Breath of Life

my heartbeat delivering oxygenated blood
my lungs attuned to the music of dancing oxygen—
every organ of my body
every cell and tissue
converge with every breath
accepting the energy of the sun,

but this calm breathing depends on massive
supernova explosions
where iron and magnesium atoms are forged,
life as we know it in our bodies—
depends on these two metal atoms,
created by fusion as the universe
went through nuclear reactions
evolving through billions of years,

chlorophyll and hemoglobin
similar molecules
differ mainly—on whether
magnesium or iron is at their center,
metal atoms prepared earth for life
acquiring an oxygen atmosphere,
magnesium in chlorophyll molecules
separates oxygen from water,
and iron in hemoglobin molecules
carries free oxygen
to every cell,

come thou forth—every breath
tune my body to the supernova explosions
use the magnesium in every plant
to free oxygen from water
and make it available for the iron
in hemoglobin to dance
through my body.
