Evo Soul

Winston Derden

A singular conundrum of evolution and soul
is pinpointing where the soul emerges
along the evolutionary path.

Homo erectus, or some time before?
Or not until Neanderthals,
or only with homo sapiens?

The problem only gets thornier with the theory
of a human evolutionary bush, as opposed to a tree of evolution —
so many dead branches

to complicate the question of proto-souls,
semi-formed as semi-sapiens bodies.
(What might be their eternal destiny?)

Animism, of course, avoids the issue:
every material or living thing
imbued with its own numen,

the animus appropriate to
its quintessential being,
its inherent spirit evocation.

Then, there are those who propose
the soul is supposed,
what with a lack of empirical evidence,

but the easiest answer of all, of course,
is to deny evolution.
