Salvation

Winston Derden

I found out god was dead
from the cover of Time magazine.
Jesuits discovered the body.

It wasn’t exactly news to me,
just a rephrasing of the realization
that god never existed,

except in the imagination,
and had now outlived
the collective fantasy.

Not bad for a high-school kid,
though it’s been a lifetime
teasing out the implications

against the braindead persistence
of one religion or another,
all of which believe

the other guy’s god is dead
while theirs is the sole living.

If only there were a sentient flash
in the afterdeath to recognize there is no eternity.

But that’s just my intellectual gloating.
Why not have that sentient flash while living?
