One minute you’re like
chasing frogs in a brook;
getting your new PF Flyers soaked,
& getting a licking for it.
Then,
on a Sunday night in the
living room watching
the Beatles on Ed Sullivan & holding
hands with a girl for the 1st time.

The next moment
you’re a human hard on- jacked on beer;
mister testosterone chasing love,
or jockeying a British motorcycle
down route 95 south
eying the speedometer;
its needle edging on 90 mph.
... & the life changing party later on
at the dam,
drinking keg beer & smoking grass
with long haired friends;
Hendrix blaring from a car’s stereo
& that girl walked over...

An instant later you’ve moved to Europe
learning a new language;
studying art,
watching your child being born
in the Rotes Kreuz Krankenhaus.

The next second
you’ve crossed the 50-year mark;
a half fucking century has lapsed.
You’re amazed, baffled, & a little pissed.
Shit hurts in the morning.
& now...

There you are
sitting in a recliner,
staring like a zombie at
an Android’s screen
thinking ‘bout ordering
another god-damned spatula
from Amazon...
