Atlanta

Susie Gharib

He brought home a wounded bird of prey, a bullet-hole drilled in its wing. Two kids eagerly approached to watch their dad nurse another gigantic guest. The falcon struggled with ferocious claws, viewing its jailer with cautious eyes, but experienced hands soon brought the fury of a betrayed monarch to a standstill.
The recovering bird acquired a name, would perch on a black glove as it ate its meal – a domestic man with the wildest bird showed children a pact between earth and sky. Atlanta animated the household with a beseeching beak that opened each time Mr. Francis convened a meeting whose every discussion revolved around the swiftness with which the newcomer learnt. Too fond to part with their feathered friend, they voted to keep Atlanta on land, but Mandy who meanly withdrew her vote felt left out from this ring of pals. A jealous nature refused to feel the glow of a new flame to their hearth. Her complaints about being left alone with a treacherous bird were soon resolved by Mr. Francis who, during his business hours, left Atlanta in the car, a most diligent security guard. Free of shackles and iron bars, Atlanta met the inquisitive gaze of bewildered passers-by with a rare composure and a lofty brow.
As the time drew near for a business trip, Mandy decreased her list of Atlanta’s misdeeds. When Mr. Francis bid them goodbye, he exhorted them to keep the bird inside its safe shelter when fed. Two days passed without mishaps but on the third Mandy let Atlanta slip out. With reluctance to fly into an unknown sky, to part with a family of tender friends, Atlanta spent in the garden a very wild night. The kids pleaded with Mandy to pluck her courage and entice Atlanta back into her little cottage but Mandy promised that the toughness of such a bird would brave the grumbling storm ahead. Their eyes refused to yield to sleep; each hailstone chilled two hearts that grieved. A desperate impatience for the break of day brought nothing but death drenched in rain.
