Double Negative

We are not unintelligent, despite
what the text tells us, and have
learned to avoid double negatives.
But sometimes things slip through
the best defenses, when sense escapes
its own skin and slowly drips sap on
the boundaries of the sacred village.

The warning dogs ask what such
a person is up to hiding down there
on the page. The cooks among us
cannot stop thinking about
those nineteen lines of free verse,
not knowing how to think of
anything else until they know
what to think of them.

The solitaries seem to call like
cockatoos out of the storm’s exhaust.
Tarzan: me poet, you dummy. And
Friday: do you have a permit to
camp here? The eye-level sign
standing at the forest’s edge says
that the undersigned is the only one
who has lived his particular life, and
its studied obscurities are now your
endowment, your mission impossible.
If I can take in an editor or the envy of
the world, I can surely confute you too.
