Those Destined To Repeat Their Mistakes

Charles Hayes

During the Vietnam War Walt Kelly’s comic strip, Pogo, took Admiral Oliver Perry’s famous quote, “We have met the enemy and they are ours,” and satirized it for the first Earth Day in April 1970 , “We have met the enemy and they are us.” In that same vein after the re-election of George Bush I knew that no terrorist, but the people of this country were my greatest threat. Then when Trump came along l knew that he was a good fit for us. Still though, I thought that what he represented was too indecent for us. Alas, it was not. Afterward, I too had to adopt and render someone else’s quote. Voltaire’s Dr. Pangloss and his “it’s the best of all possible worlds” I used to explain and live with what seemed so improbable because that was ironically the closest thing to the truth that I felt could exist in such a land. Even so, given that my hope for better could well be the last of many good things to die, going into 2020 I have pre-planned for its funeral. Then fittingly, my disappointment and grief will assume the Vietnam mantra of the kids who went through the same thing in a different milieu.
“Fuck it, it don’t mean nothing.”
