You find what you like and you keep it,
and you use it,
That aqua blue shirt you’ve worn
nearly every day since you first put
it on, now ragged, but you wear cause
it fits just right and shelters your bones
despite the holes,
And you get that—And I get it from you.
Your t-shirts (with the pocket
for a napkin and some odds n ends)
Abide in the top drawer.
You like sweets more than anyone else
I’ve ever known, but you’re paper thin, and
you’ve always been, cause you take pride
in being quick and strong.
You cackle, sky-colored eyes telling stories
of a different life, a man before wrinkles,
before peeling apples for grandchildren,
before watching a toddler was exercise.
And I never want to forget these things,
so I snap pictures and I jot down notes,
but I know, regretfully and respectfully,
memories just aren’t the same as these
moments,
Right here,
right now,
with you
hugging my neck and
walking me to the door
Ever saying, ever living,
“I love you, doll.
Be careful,
Whatever you do.”
