The history of thieves isn’t written down
Though I’ve read many newspaper or schoolbook accounts —
Accounts that vary by fact, or by storytellers
With tongues of fire, spreading red ants into abandoned hills.

Hidden tunnels, deeply dug in the sun burnt earth.
A map would be useless here
Even when marked with a red felt-tipped pen.
Have you ever seen a red highlighter?

Nothing but dead cell phones, blank stares
Picnic blankets carried on millions of feet,
The pop of the cork —

The first smell of bubbles, the trickle of sweat
The on one knee tale to share with others
Growing ever more fanciful as the years progress.
