Miracle Drugs
cure us;
they also kill us

I have had
pneumonia
three times

The first time
I was very young
and penicillin was
not readily available

I was given sulfur drugs
and was in bed for 3 weeks
(my mother would carry
me to the bathroom)
but I got better

The second time
I was in my late teens
and the third time
in my forties and
both times had
penicillin. I got
better almost
immediately.

But my wife,
the sainted Barbara,
is very allergic to
penicillin and had
a very bad reaction
as a child


So miracle drugs
are a mixed bag

A very good friend,
a doctor himself,
had been fighting
bladder cancer
for a few years

When it seemed
to move to his
liver, he was
moved to a drug
that had a high
success rate
in combatting
the cancer

Unfortunately,
not only did the
drug not work,
it interfered with
his muscles and
respiratory system
causing his death

Another friend,
afflicted with
Multiple Sclerosis
for years was moved
to a new drug that
had an excellent
history of slowing
the effects of MS
with no side effects


Unfortunately, he
became the first case
to apparently contract
an incurable virus
of the brain as a
result of the medication,
lost the ability to see,
walk, and then talk, and
he died within a month

We don’t expect
such results from
well-tested drugs
Then again, we
don’t expect planes
to fall out of the sky

Miracle drugs are
indeed a mixed bag;
They can cure us
or kill us.
