She’s been on the phone her whole lunch hour
telling the Baby Zombie company
their product’s a piece of crap
they’d better refund her money or she’ll set it up right
in front of the house with their name in big letters
so everybody will see how inferior it is
to the toddler zombie on the tire swing
now that’s convincing with his leg stump
kinda kicking in the air and the blood pumping
out and now it’s supposed to rain
and she hasn’t got a backup indoor venue
the Elks want fifty dollars and you have to use
their bar and the VFW has a 300 dollar
minimum and she’s spent 500 on booze alone
and 80 bucks to rent the fountain for the blood
bath and well it’s probably not too late to cancel the cold cut
platters and the DJ though she spent
weeks putting together that play list we all loved:
Monster Mash and Teen Angel, Long White Veil
and Purple People Eater, My Friend the Witch
Doctor and Potion # 9, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins
I Put a Spell On You (that one was my
contribution,) Bad Moon Rising, Werewolves
of London, Season of the Witch and THRILLER;
Halloween’s the only decent holiday
she hates Christmas, now that’ll scare a child
some man crawling in the chimney, and
look at Easter, she says, I don’t understand
how you can get a bunny out of a massacred man,
who put that one together, but she surprises herself,
smiles, ‘Technically, it is a zombie holiday.’
