Brett Tammy Jeremy but
never Kenny
—though as I ate my corn
flakes before a milk carton
pictured with missing
children goofy but slightly
smug like me I knew I
lived in a land that preyed
on children

Later I would come across
stories & myths about adults
or gods who devoured
the young

And so the lessening of
anxiety with each passing
un-kidnapped year until
I became an adult

Someone who became
Kenneth and then Mister
and even Professor

someone
who could lead
but also lose
those still young enough
to believe in Gods
