I didn’t stop to think.
Because we weren’t taught to think
in our day. Only to go and buy and cheer.

Now I have to try to explain
to my grandkids how their daddy died
in the war they’re learning about in History

as The Bad War. The war
that showed we weren’t the good guys anymore.
They asked me what the decal was doing on my car

in the photograph in the marble frame on the mantle.
It was taken when their daddy loved
red white and blue and wanted

to be one of Our Troops we were Supporting.
I think they’re teaching my grandkids
to stop and think.

I think
it’s going to be difficult
for us all.
