Wildflowers

Extraordinary and inextinguishable, he
learned to be silent about his powers. Once
he lay in a green meadow of wildflowers,
stroked a fiery blossom that was irresistible,
then saw that the petals had become colorless.
He tasted his fingers, now stained, and recognized

the blood of the battlefield the field had been
or would be one day. He’s traveled the world like this
for centuries, millennia by now,
marked by flowers from Verdun to Gettysburg,
Wounded Knee, Marathon, all of Indochina,
Africa, the Near East, and a field near you.

He’s lived long and has asked me not to tell
you where he is now, having set up a tent
in a peaceful place—peaceful, that is, so far.
But should you come across a field of flowers
or garden where the color’s drained, you’ll know
he’s been there recently, and must be nearby.
