At a poetry reading today
the poet announcing his poem
made sure that when he said
“him” that we understood
that he was referring to a hymn
— a religious melody

It made me think back
my days in the Army
My unit was one steeped
in religious good will

When a platoon corporal
annoyed us, rather than
moan and become depressed
we would fall back on religion

One GI would call out
Let’s have a hymn for Corporal Fugett

We would dutifully bow our heads
and chant
Hymn Hymn Fuck Hymn
