The Fence

Scott Brown

Your flailing freedom flag
stings my face,
scarring my
screech-ringing ears with
“You can’t tell me what to do,”

and, “It’s my life.”
Sending my eyes
reaching for the floor,
burning, tearing, tearing
you from me as you,

independently handcuffed
to a zoo fence
of self determination
built by your
pound, pound, pounding,
nailing liberty to limitation;

freeing you
To roam inside
where you want,
when you want,
with whom you want,
while my

guilty asking mouth
decrescendos,
heard like only
the edges of
blue notes
over a railing
so tall
I can’t see you.
