Sea of Green

Paul F. Hyde

She had been swimming in the emerald ocean for weeks now. He had tried his best to keep up with her, but he found it difficult to match her stamina. He seemed to float and struggle with the tides while she swam effortlessly in the deceptive depths. He supposed that was the reason that she had gone so much further than he had. She had swum far and fast indeed until the terrible day that she swam out too far and couldn’t find her way back.
He dived in after her with complete abandon and swum as fast as his aching arms would take him, but he couldn’t find her. The strength seeped from his arms and his legs grew weak. Still, he did not give up. He gulped mouthfuls of bottle green liquid, trying in vain to keep his head above water.
Finally, he thought he saw her head bobbing a little way away. He could see her hair shining, so vividly red against the green. He made his way toward her, panicking as the pool of red disappeared beneath the unforgiving waves. He dove down to catch her body as it began to sink towards the bottom. He could not drag her to the surface and yet he could not stand the thought of leaving her; even now.
He floated in the depths, embracing her; looking into her eyes as they both sank, fading into the deep.

The coroner marked the cause of death for both corpses as absinthe overdose. They noted that although the bodies were found in the same room, the female died several days before the male.
It was as if he was trying to catch up.
